Course Structure
As in Standard Grade the course aims to offer the student experiences relevant to the students' lives and to encourage them to become more visually aware. The course consists of three main areas of study:
- Expressive Activity involves the innovation of ideas, feelings, knowledge and the use of media.
- Design Activity is chiefly concerned with the candidate's personal creative development through involvement with open-ended problem solving using appropriate design processes to devise solutions to problems.
- Art and Design Studies is concerned with knowledge and understanding of selected areas of the visual arts and of design, in both contemporary and historical context
Assessment
Internal Assessment
Candidate attainment will be assessed by Art staff against outcomes and performance criteria for the level concerned as per The Art and Design Arrangements Document and Moderated by SQA. Work is assessed on performance in each of the three Activities described above; Expressive Folio, Design Folio and Art and Design Studies.
External Assessment
Practical work at all levels will be externally assessed by means of the Course Review, comprising the Folio of Expressive Activity and the Folio of Design Activity.
Art and Design Studies will be externally assessed at Intermediate II and Higher levels by means of a written examination.
The Intermediate II examination lasts 1 hour and is worth 40 marks.
The Higher examination lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and is worth 60 marks.
NB: All three activities and the final external examinations must be passed before a Higher or Intermediate II may be awarded.
