S5/6 Certificated Physical Education

Higher PE is the perfect option for those pupils advancing into 5th year who have shown an aptitude or desire for physical education.

The Higher course is a continuation from the Intermediate 2 course but focuses on only 3 activities; Basketball, Badminton and Trampolining. There is a higher level of expectancy in both areas of the course (Practical Performance and Analysis of Performance) as the criterion to perform well becomes more specific.

Pupils work through each area of the course, completing an end of unit test at the end of each block. This is a national requirement in all subjects. This allows staff to monitor pupils’ progress and make any necessary changes to the level at which the pupil is currently studying, hopefully ensuring that every pupil achieves a pass at some level at the end of the course.

Sport and Healthy Eating is a second way that pupil’s may elect to be involved in certificated PE in senior school. This is a course designed to work in tandem Home Economics, cementing the identity of a Lifestyle Development Faculty. This course is predominantly practical by nature.

Pupil’s will work towards achieving a Practical Performance unit in PE, just as in Higher PE, but instead completing and Analysis of Performance unit, Pupil’s will instead spend 2 periods of the 5 in Home Economics. Here they will work towards an Intermediate 2 pass in Food Preparation for Healthy Eating and a practical cookery award. All certificates are recognised and delivered by SQA.
