Global Citizenship at Our Lady's High School

Like many other schools in Scotland, Our Lady's High has a longstanding tradition of fundraising for many charities. In particular, there is a strong link between SCIAF and Our Lady's.

In 1999, the School Chaplaincy Team reviewed pastoral life in the school and came to the following conclusions:

pupils should be encouraged to develop a stronger sense of responsibility towards the developing world rather than seeing themselves simply as providers of financial aid;

initiatives to promote solidarity and a sense of responsibility towards the developing world should be developed in a whole-school context and should not be seen as the exclusive role of the Religious Education Department.

The team's findings were well timed and coincided with other issues and priorities that had been identified within the school:

the growing prominence given in national curriculum reports and papers to themes such as global citizenship and interdependence;

the emphasis given in the school Quality and Standards Report 1999-2000 to the need for enhanced cross-curricular initiatives;

the desire of the school to enhance the school ethos and create a common identity and purpose among pupils, staff and parents

The school decided that the best way to respond to these issues and priorities was through whole-school involvement in SCIAF's Project Partnership scheme.
