Kamwokya Christian Caring Community (KCCC)
Kamwokya is a shanty town in the outskirts of Kampala, the capital of Uganda.
The people living in Kamwokya are desperately poor, but also have to cope with appalling illnesses - malaria, cholera, typhoid and AIDS. The Ugandan Ministry of Health estimates more than 940,000 AIDS-related deaths in the country since 1982.
Most people in Kamwokya have lost relatives to AIDS-related diseases. The United Nations estimates 880,000 children orphaned by AIDS. Apart from the emotional loss of parents and grandparents, there is also the problem of day-to-day living. Who looks aftrer the children when their parents are gone?
The Kamwokya Christian Community is a major focus for hope as well as social services.
