The Kids Lit Quiz is an international competition for pupils below the age of 14 who love reading. It is the brainchild of Wayne Mills (the guy in the hat in the photo lower down). Wayne is a lecturer from New Zealand, whose passion is children's literature. Every year Wayne searches Great Britain, Australia and South Africa for the best teams and bring them back to join the best team from New Zealand. This year he added China to his world trekking. Our Lady's HS has taken part every year since the KLQ began in Great Britain. You can find out more about the competition on the official Kids Lit Quiz website. Every year in September/October we start the hunt for our team. The competition is open to any OLHS pupil in S2.
Among the judges were North Lanarkshire librarians and well known writers like Theresa Breslin, author of Divided City, Whispers in the Graveyard and many others. Books were on sale and the authors were happy to autograph their work for the enthusiastic teams (and get their photos taken.) Still not convinced? Well, here's what one of the OLHS team thought of the competition:
So how does it work? The teams all sit at tables while Wayne reads out his questions. There is a separate answer sheet for each round. The team confer over the answers and write them down. Each sheet is collected and marked after the final question in each round. However, in between the official competition questions, Wayne Mills has books and book tokens to give away.
Prizes are available to individuals answering questions, top scoring teams in each round and even members of the audience. The winners receive an opportunity to represent the West of Scotland at the UK finals. The UK winners attend the world finals - held for the last few years in New Zealand! So, if you fancy some international jet-setting and like reading, why not try out for next year's team? Or if you're still not sure try these questions here. And don't worry if you can't answer them all yourself - remember you're part of a team. Good luck!
