Drama Club launched

Mr Millar's has launched a lunchtime club for S1/2 pupils interested in Drama. Known as the Drama Academy, the club is already proving extremely popular with lower school pupils.

Heartstart Presentations

Staff and pupils from Our Lady's HeartStart group were busy sharing their skills today.

HeartStart trains pupils in CPR techniques with assistance from the St Andrew Ambulance Association.

North Lanarkshire are expanding the project across the authority, and this afternoon's visit provided an opportunity for other school staff to see demonstrations, ask questions and have a go themselves.

The North Lanarkshire Catalyst Book Awards were held at Motherwell Civic Centre today. An audience of 3rd year pupils listened to readings from shortlisted authors Celia Rees, Alan Gibbons, Melvin Burgess and Mary Hooper.

Sixth year pupils from OLHS acted as ushers and helped out at the question and answer session by moving around the enthusiastic audience with microphones.

As a reward for their hard work, the pupils were invited to lunch with the authors, who have become new reading favourites.

And our congratulations to successful author, Alan Gibbons, who won this year's award for his novel, "Hold on".

Triathlon

Several OLHS pupils took part at the recent Triathlon.

Upper school CLSA certificate pupils were involved in organising the event.

Higher Drama Theatre Visit

The Higher Drama class, accompanied by Drama teacher Mr Neil Millar recently visited East Kilbride Arts Centre to watch a performance of Passing Places by Stephen Greenhorn. This play was crucial to their Higher Drama studies and was well attended.

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the play which has given them opportunity for discussion in class.

University Open Days

A number of upper school pupils recently had the opportunity to visit Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities.

Pupils were able to visit a number of departments and chat to both students and lecturers. Many pupils took the opportunity to listen in on some lectures to get a feel for University life.

Pupils visiting Glasgow University also had the opportunity to participate in a Samba Drumming workshop and learn a number of new and unusual instruments.

Extra PE!

A number of extra-curricular classes have begun in the PE department this year. A dance class will be held on a Tuesday at 3.30, Badminton and Trampolining clubs resume on a Wednesday at 3.30 with the Basketball club on a Thursday at 3.30.

Cross Country Results

All first and second year pupils recently participated in a Cross Country championship.

The results are as follows:

S1 Girls: 1st - Cara McCrory, 2nd - Rebecca Murphy, 3rd - Megan Cook.
S1 Boys: 1st - Daniel Rafferty, 2nd - Andrew Easton, 3rd - Ryan Cherrie.

S2 Girls: 1st - Laura Scott, 2nd - Stacey Tollan, 3rd - Natasha Gaittens.
S2 Boys: 1st - Peter Galbraith, 2nd - John Robertson, 3rd - Michael Devlin.

A Cross Country team, comprising some of these pupils has been formed in preparation for the North Lanarkshire Schools Cross Country Championship in October.

PTA donation

Staff and pupils at Our Lady's are delighted at the news from the latest PTA meeting. Departments had been asked to nominate projects to receive financial support from the PTA, which reviewed the bids at their monthly meeting last night.

The Association were impressed by all of the submissions and have agreed to support four projects totaling a staggering £1400.

The successful projects are:

Physical Education: four new trampoline mats

Science: eight electronic boards

Social Subjects: DVD player

Art & Design: sketchbooks

Our thanks to the PTA for their generosity and to all parents and supporters of the school who helped in raising this money.

Pistoia visitors

Photo: visitors from Pistoia with their OLHS hosts.A group of Italian students from Pistoia are visiting the school this week.

The Italian visitors are paired up with fourth and fifth year students from Our Lady's and will be shadowing them in school for the rest of the week.

A number of upper school pupils accompanied the Italian visitors to a disco in the school theatre, organised by the Modern Languages department. This was well attended and enjoyed by all.

Van Gogh exhibition

More than fifty pupils 4th and 5th year pupils visited Dean Gallery in Edinburgh to view an exhibition of Van Gogh paintings in Britain.

Pupils were accompanied by Mr Jakusz and Ms Steinert of the art department and the visit proved to be a valuable contribution to their art curriculum.

Summer School Parents’ Evening

Following a very successful Summer School, parents have been invited to an evening celebrating the achievements of those who took part.

In addition to demonstrating the work already accomplished, complete with all the photographs taken over the week, Linda Gallagher (S1) will be providing the audience with her Powerpoint display of the pupils’ experiences.

Each Summer School participant will be receiving certificates from the Headteacher, Mr Bernard Love.

S1-S6 Buddying

First year pupils have now met their sixth year buddies. The new House captains organised the Buddying Groups following specialist training in the Centenary Suite at Firpark on 30th August.

The first meeting allowed pupils to meet up and find out a little about each other. More meetings have been organised to allow sixth year to support new pupils through their first terms at OLHS.

S3 History trip

Third year pupils were able to experience life in the trenches for themselves last week when they visited an exhibition at Motherwell Heritage Centre.

Created to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the exhibition allowed pupils to view original artefacts, find out information and explore a reconstructed trench.

Health Workshop for Third Year

Third year pupils recently benefited from a health workshop organised by the school nurses and the school’s Partnership Officers. A total of 63 third year girls took part in a range of workshops, including oral hygiene and hand washing.

One of the highlights included a broad discussion on the merits of heavily advertised beauty products versus soap and water. Pupils also had the opportunity to try out a specialist cabinet that identified microscopic germs which can live on your skin.

Finally each pupil was given a bag full of healthy goodies for their own use.
