Pupils in 1st and 2nd years have been taking part in the UK Maths Challenge Junior Competition.
The UKMT Maths Challenges are designed to stimulate interest in maths through logic and mental agility. The multiple choice questions start off relatively easy but demand more thought as the test continues. Gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded to the top performers each year across the UK.
This is the 5th year that OLHS has taken part and pupils are looking forward to adding to the school’s excellent record in certificates awarded. More information and sample questions is available from the UK Mathematics Trust. |

Higher Drama
The first group of pupils to sit Higher Drama at OLHS took part in their practical exam last week. The pupils, all 5th and 6th years, had never studied Drama prior to this year but produced outstanding performances in scenes from “The Crucible” and “Men Should Weep”.
Drama teacher, Mr Neil Millar, said, “They’ve worked incredibly hard. Higher Drama is not an easy subject and to come up with work like this in only a few months of studying is a fantastic achievement. I am so proud of them.”
A select group of staff and parents were invited to a trial run of the performances but the actual exam scenes were performed in front of an audience of 3rd year Drama pupils.

Stress Management Workshops
Pupils in S5/S6 have been attending a stress management workshop organised by the Partnership Office and run by Eileen Burns from The Stress Clinic.
More than 50 pupils volunteered to attend the 3 x 1 hour sessions held after school. The workshops introduced practical ways to relieve exam stress and aid relaxation, using techniques that pupils can learn to do at home. For example, pupils were taught exercises involving relaxing music, colour imagery and visualisation to enable them to ‘block’ out the stress and focus on positive and relaxing images.
Pupils were also given advice on what to avoid doing such as relying on caffeine or over the counter medication to relieve stress and aid sleep. |
