Holidays!

Amazing how time flies when you're having fun, isn't it? One minute, you're writing your name on your new jotters in August, the next, you're writing postcards in Wemyss Bay (if you're really lucky!)

Wherever you're spending your holidays, be it marvellous Motherwell or somewhere less exotic, have a lovely time and come back ready to work, with happy, smiley faces and pens ready in your top pocket (that's to staff and pupils!)

Good luck to everybody who's not coming back after the holidays, and we're looking forward to meeting everybody joining us as 1st years in August.

Ciao for now.

First Balloon returned

The first balloon tag has been returned to the school, from Cumnock in East Ayrshire, about 37 miles away to the south-west (the wind obviously changed direction after Motherwell, because they were originally headed for Largs).

The balloon's owner is not being identified yet to protect them from the unwelcome attentions of the world's press. The competition winner will be announced on Friday 22nd June.

Beat the Goalie Final

Congratulations to Scott Rankine for winning the Beat the Goalie final on Friday. Scott wins a signed Celtic football.

Scott and three others fired three shots apiece at our fabulous goalkeeper. The crowd were ready for a sudden death final but it proved unnecessary as the others failed to match Scott's standard.

The final total of funds raised for Oliver! has yet to be added up. Thanks to everyone who took part in this fundraising venture and a huge thanks to Ryan Cherrie, our amazing goalie.

S6 Induction Day

What no sumo suits? Nope, S6 are far too grown up for running around as chickens preferring to spend their more sedate induction sipping iced tea and discussing world issues - NOT!

While details remain elusive at present, there are whispers of orienteering, problem solving and people thinking Bearsden was really far, far away. When we know more we'll share.

Leavers' Dance

The Leavers' Dance was held tonight in Avonbridge Hotel. Everyone had a fabulous time, danced their feet off, swished around in their frocks (male teachers look very nice in sequins and satin you know) and enjoyed exciting limousine rides.

Earlier in the day, last year's S6 bid a fond farewell to their school uniforms when attending a Leavers' Mass in the Memorial Chapel, conducted by Father Miller.

Holyrood Visit

Fourteen Higher Politics pupils accompanied by staff from the Social Subjects faculty paid a visit to the Scottish Parliament today.

Following a presentation on the work of the Parliament, the group toured the building before meeting with Liberal Democrat MSP Hugh O'Donnell for a lively question and answer session.

The visit ended with puils attending Nicola Sturgeon's first question time as Health Secretary. The MSPs main focus was on the closures of Monklands and Ayr A+E units, which is highly relevant to the Higher Politics course.

S5 Induction Day

Sha lala lala lalala - name that song! Actually none of the 5th years sang it out loud, but maybe that's a good thing

We started Induction Day by splitting 101 5th years into two groups - one to brave the wild outdoors and the gravel pitch, the other to head into the cavernous depths of the LRC. And then good things happened and everyone had a laugh and walls were climbed and eggs were thrown and sumo suits were worn and anthems were sung, and some other stuff too.

More information on the Induction Day will appear on the website once the staff have had a chance to recover from it. Photos will appear alongside and S5 may never recover from them.

Balloon Race

Fundraising again for Oliver! and this time we're releasing balloons.

The biodegradeable balloons were filled with helium this morning and tied with a tag showing the school name and address. Anyone finding a balloon is asked to send the tag back to the school. The tag which comes from furthest away wins the prize.

Overall, 160 brightly coloured balloons were released at assembly this morning to much cheering and promptly vanished over the top of the building.

The wind took them over Motherwell College towards the Clyde - if you follow that trajectory, you'll eventually end up in Largs (according to Google Maps) so keep your eyes open if you're heading for the coast this weekend.

The Balloon Race raised £100 for Oliver! funds.

It's a Knock-Out

A group of ten lunatics, who should remain nameless (but won't) put themselves through torture, foam and a lot of water on Saturday at Strathclyde Park as the OLHS It's a Knock Out Team.

After warming up with some aerobics (thanks to Mrs Osei-Oppong), the comeptition began. Competing against five other teams, waving the Ugandan flag (for Kamwokya), the team "ran up and down a lot of hills covered with foam", put jigsaws together and dressed up as clowns.

Our amazing team raised almost £800 for St Andrew's Hospice, so well done to all of them: Ms Anderson, Mr Batchelor, Mr Carlin, Mrs Darroch, Mr Law, Mr Lawie, Ms McConville, Mr McGuinness, Ms Newman and Mrs Osei-Oppong.

The team claim that they were all far too busy running around on foam to be taking pictures so no pictorial account exists apparently.

Team OLHS were very happy to lose to the Firefighters, secure in the knowledge that really fit people might be rescuing them one day.

Cinq jours plus tard ...

Forty staff and pupils enjoyed a trip to Paris this weekend. The group were waved off by friends and family at OLHS just after nine o'clock on Tuesday morning. The bus took them to Hull for an overnight ferry to Zeebrugge.

Most of Wednesday was spent at Parc Asterix before arriving at the hotel. The next day was spent exploring Paris before finding themselves in Eurodisney on Friday.

The weary group finally returned to Motherwell on Saturday after a whirlwind five days!

Farewell Ms McGowan

More sad faces today as Ms McGowan leaves us to take up her new post as Principal Teacher of Performing Arts at Clyde Valley High School.

Anne McGowan has been an extremely committed member of the Performing Arts Faculty, both as pupil and teacher. So much so that she's going to keep coming back down the road to keep up the Oliver! rehearsals.

Good luck in your new job. We hope Clyde Valley knows how lucky they are to get you.
